The Heart of Worship

Though worship may take the form of an outward expression, it is dependent on a genuine inward reality.

In Paul Baloche's Youtube series Leading Worship, he highlights the necessity of having the Heart of Worship. Baloche emphasizes that, ideally, those leading in worship, specifically of the musical variety, should be cultivating their private ministry with the Lord the six days prior to the day they lead. He points out two practical ways to do this, the first of which is "Being a Person of the Word". Colossians 3:16 says "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly and out of that will come psalms and hymns and spiritual songs". Memorizing scripture and, as the book of Deuteronomy says, "dwelling on it day and night", is a way to make it a part of the 24/7. Baloche also mentions the need to be a "Person of Prayer". Praying the Scriptures is an excellent way commune with God. Consequently, the voice of God will become easier to discern.

Romans 12 says that the act of worship of the man of God is to submit himself as a "living sacrifice" to the Lord. I love how Paul Baloche makes it clear that worship is not only something that happens on Sundays. It's a daily practice. The great trap for worship leaders, especially, is to limit worship to singing songs on a Sunday morning. As it says in Romans, we're called to surrender all of ourselves: our hearts, our minds, our wills to the Lord, sacrificing ourselves to Him just as He sacrificed himself, though to a much greater degree, for us. I must always be thinking to myself, "What areas of my life am I keeping from God, and how can I surrender those areas as part of my spiritual act of worship?"

  1. I love how you mentioned how important prayer is leading up to the worship service. Another thing I like is how you said worship is a daily practice not just a one day thing. Good job.
